During my first pregnancy, I did everything I possibly could to prepare:

✔️Active birth workshop

✔️Aquanatal classes

✔️All the baby books and magazines

✔️Midwife-led antenatal courses

I even drove a 28-mile round trip to get to the only Pregnancy Pilates class available at the time!

But my second pregnancy?

A very different story...

Like so many second-time mums, I was busy juggling a pre-schooler, rushing between activities, and trying to squeeze pregnancy around daily life. I didn't do any of the things I’d done religiously the first time round. Even the midwives were pretty relaxed about seeing me.  It was definitely a case of  "you’ve done it all before, so you’ll be fine!”

But the truth is… just because you've done it before, it doesn’t necessarily make things easier.

What if your first birth didn’t go the way you hoped?

My first birth ended in an emergency caesarean when what I had been hoping for was a home birth. When I was pregnant again, I just really wanted a VBAC - but wanting a different experience isn’t the same as preparing for one. And second pregnancies can also bring their own challenges:

  • Pelvic or back pain happening earlier

  • More fatigue

  • A pelvic floor that never fully recovered

  • Sleep that’s unpredictable (especially with a little one already at home)

  • Less time to slow down and connect with your pregnancy
